This jolly day's cricket on Oxford's magical cricketing isle has happily long enjoyed the unparalleled culinary support of this year's skipper Sam Herbert's mum Tracey. The sumptuous deliciousness of her homemade tea was clearly too high on everyone's mind, as the delectable off-field quality far outlived the memory of the day's on-field cricket.
Three types of exotic quiches, plump pork pies and sausage rolls, endless varieties of freshly-cut crustless sandwiches, assorted sliced meats and cheeses, crisps and biscuits galore, a sweet trolley laden down with award-winning-cakes and scones with giant dollops of fresh cream and strawberry jam as far as the eye could see.
For the record 176-9 on the board for SOA in this 35-overs match seemed reasonable at halfway, only for the Mase brothers, Louis and Olly, to put on a chanceless opening ton together for the Magdalen College School old boys all rather too easily. The former ended on 73 not out. Perhaps the sight of fielders licking their lips and jogging off to see what of tea was still left over was a sure sign....
