Chulmleigh 18 August 2024

Captain Alex Ross

Won by 15 Runs

SOA 197 for 7 dec (Paddy Daniel 67)

Chulmleigh 182 all out (Colin Allen 5 for 20)

The picturesque Chulmleigh… the start of the second leg of the western tour, and for the first time in a while it wasn’t raining! Captain Ross won the toss and elected to bat.

Vinnie Connolly and Dan Edwards to open… The pair got SOA of to a flyer before Connolly fell for 12 in the second over. Hugo Cobham came and went without troubling the scoring, with James Florey rebuilding alongside Edwards putting on a good 35 before Florey fell for 8. Ross came in and hit a quick fire 8. Then the star of the innings joined the party, Paddy Daniel batting well with Edwards (who was still hanging on in there) took the innings to lunch. Edwards fell shortly after lunch for a well made 29.  Which brought Youngster F. Witcher to the middle who batted well under the guidance of the experienced Daniels. The pair put on 40 to get the score to 107-5 before Witcher fell for 18. Ben Jeffries (37*) saw the innings to a declaration alongside Daniels who scored a brilliant 67 with SOA finishing 197-6.

Swapnil Kulkarni (5-19-0) and the President Ed Phillips (12-36-3) opened the bowling both bowling tight spells to start. With the score on 40-0 SOA needed a wicket on came Colin Allen (9.5-20-6) who took the wicket with his second ball! Allen bowled brilliantly and turned the game on its head with a spell of 6 overs 8 runs for 2 wickets. Wickets continued to fall but Chulmleigh continued to score runs and with 20 runs to win and 4 wickets in hand victory was in sight for the home side. The President and Pres elect Allen bowled well in the final 6 overs with Allen taking the final 3 wickets in 5 balls.

Yet another SOA classic. Both sides retired to the pub to sample one or a few pints before the next days game.
